چکیده

In this work, we wish to determine the complexity of deciding whether a given multiset of symbols, chosen from some finite set of symbols, can be derived according to the rules of a given context-free grammar. Providing an upper bound for this problem is of interest to computational linguistics, one goal of which is to classify the complexity of parsing and understanding natural language. We consider a simplified subset of fist-order propositional logic consisting of only those formulas containing universal quantification, conjunction operations, and equality relations. Variables xi will be represented as i repetitions of the symbol x (for example, x3 becomes xxx).

Propositional Logic Syntax Acquisition Using Induction and Self-Organization

This paper addresses the problem of the acquisition of the syntax of propositional logic. An approach based on general purpose cognitive capacities such as invention, adoption, parsing, generation and induction is proposed. Selforganisation principles are used to show how a shared set of preferred lexical entries and grammatical constructions, i.e., a language, can emerge in a population of aut...

Equality propositional logic and its extensions

We introduce a new formal logic, called equality propositional logic. It has two basic connectives, $boldsymbol{wedge}$ (conjunction) and $equiv$ (equivalence). Moreover, the $Rightarrow$ (implication) connective can be derived as $ARightarrow B:=(Aboldsymbol{wedge}B)equiv A$. We formulate the equality propositional logic and demonstrate that the resulting logic has reasonable properties such a...

On Stronger Calculi for QBFs

Quantified Boolean formulas (QBFs) generalize propositional formulas by admitting quantifications over propositional variables. QBFs can be viewed as (restricted) formulas of first-order predicate logic and easy translations of QBFs into first-order formulas exist. We analyze different translations and show that first-order resolution combined with such translations can polynomially simulate we...

Lecture Notes on Noncorrespondence 15-816: Modal Logic

In lecture 7, we have seen how axiomatics and semantics of modal logic fit together in soundness proofs and correspondence proofs. We have seen several examples of classes of Kripke frames that are characterized by formulas of propositional modal logic. These were several special cases. But we are looking for a general correspondence result. Can we find a full correspondence result? For any for...

Abduction as Satisfiability

Abduction is reasoning in propositional or first-order logic that provides explanations for observations. We show how context-free parsing and automated planning can be formulated using abductive rules and present a fast prover based on propositional satisfiability. Furthermore we show how weighted abduction can be efficiently implemented in the prover.
